One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
